UNY Organizes Visiting Professor Program with Biotechnology Expert from Malaysia

Yogyakarta, May 21, 2024 – The Biology Education Master’s Program, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Yogyakarta State University (UNY) held a Visiting Professor Program featuring a biotechnology expert from the International Islamic University Malaysia. The event took place from Tuesday, May 21 to Friday, May 24, 2024, in Meeting Room 3, FMIPA UNY.

Participants

This program was attended by three classes, namely:

  • BIO 003 and BIO 004 classes of the Biology Education Master’s Program for the course Biotechnology Studies for Biology PSP
  • Class A of the Science Education Master’s Program for the Biotechnology course


Objectives

The Visiting Professor with the topic Application of Biotechnology in the Medical Field aimed to:

  1. Enhance Student Understanding:
    • Provide in-depth knowledge of biotechnology applications in the medical field
    • Introduce the latest techniques and technologies in genetic engineering and medical biotechnology
  2. Improve Faculty and Laboratory Competence:
    • Provide practical training on the use of zebrafish as an experimental animal model
    • Enhance skills in applying internationally recognized research protocols
  3. Expand International Networks:
    • Build academic and research networks with international institutions
    • Encourage research collaboration in the field of medical biotechnology
  4. Introduce the Latest Innovations:
    • Introduce the latest innovations in medical biotechnology
    • Encourage the adoption of cutting-edge technologies and methodologies in research
  5. Develop a Relevant Curriculum:
    • Enrich lectures with the latest information from experts in the field
    • Align the biotechnology curriculum with current developments in medical science and technology
  6. Increase Student Motivation and Interest:
    • Boost students’ motivation and interest in biotechnology courses
    • Encourage students to pursue further research and career development in medical biotechnology


Speaker and Materials

This Visiting Professor Program featured Dr. Mohd Hamzah Bin Mohd Nasir, Assistant Professor (Biotechnology) and Professional Technologist (Biotechnology) from the International Islamic University Malaysia.

Dr. Hamzah delivered material on Application of Biotechnology in the Medical Field covering:

  • Applications of Recombinant DNA Technology in Livestock and Medicine: Vaccine production and monoclonal antibodies
  • Animal Cloning: Techniques and applications
  • Genome Editing and its Applications in Gene Therapy
  • PCR and Protein Analysis: PCR techniques and protein analysis

In addition to lectures, Dr. Hamzah also conducted a training session titled Toxicity and Teratogenicity using Zebrafish Embryo (Based on OECD 236 Protocol) intended for laboratory staff and faculty interested in the topic.
